Safe Environment

In the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, developed in 2002, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (“USCCB”) expressed its commitment to working with parents, educators, civil authorities, and various organizations in the protection of children and youth.

Responding to the call for accountability, the Diocese of Honolulu provides background screening and training for clergy, religious, and adult laity, including volunteers, employees, and independent contractors, in the prevention and recognition of child abuse. Adults learn to recognize signs and symptoms of abuse, the responsibilities of mandated reporters, and how to report alleged child abuse.

Children and youth are assured that they are made in God’s image and likeness and have a right to a safe, caring environment. Their training focuses on personal safety skills, recognition of possible abusive relationships and the importance of identifying trusted adults.

Saint Anthony School embraces this responsibility and provides training for all students from Preschool through Grade 8. A listing of the approved safe environment curricula, all of which are in good moral standing with the Catholic Church, is available on the Diocese website.  Specific instruction materials, reviewed and approved by the Diocese of Honolulu are used in the implementation of these programs. Curricula used by St. Anthony School for this program are made available to parents for their review upon request.
